Custom flat screen built-ins
We have come across plenty of these "closet" spaces builders leave open for a TV/ entertainment niche. Nothing really fits right, too much room, not enough room etc. A great solution is to build up the framing and drywall. Here are two examples.
This is the start of one for a modern flat screen. Framing then a drywall backer.
Finished up nicely with texture that perfectly blends to the existing walls. The black speaker down below is a mock cover that actually gives access to speaker components below as well as wire and power hidden from view. Very nice and clean. This picture shows the TV, satellite, DVD & stereo components fully wired. Not a wire in site.
This one was custom built to fit an older projection style flat screen. We used a beautiful soap stone tile for trim. You just have to see this one in person to fully appreciate.
You can see the wires in the picture but when everything is in place they are completely hidden.

"Super" Desks
We have this "funny spot" at the top of our stairs. We decided to custom build a desk for our girls computer. It fits perfect, better than anything we could find pre-made. Built from 3/4" birch.
The best thing about this desk is it gives our 12 & 15 year old a tiny bit of privacy but we can walk up the stairs and see what site they are surfing or if they are really doing "homework" at anytime.
Better yet is the cost....about 1/4 what you would spend in a furniture store!
We built another in their room for homework, writing, drawing etc. It takes up far less space than a standard desk but still gives plenty of room to work. This one has a white board as a backer. Our youngest LOVES white boards and dry erase markers. It also has under shelf lighting, no need for a desk lamp!
